North Carolina’s renewable energy tax credit, which can be combined with the Federal solar tax credit, makes purchasing and installing a solar energy system on your home more affordable now than ever.

Tax credit amount: 35% of the installed cost.
Expenditures eligible for the tax credit include the cost of equipment and associated design, construction and installation costs less any discounts, rebates, public funding, advertising, installation assistance credits, name referral allowances or other similar reductions.
Maximum credit:
$10,500 for solar electric (photovoltaic) system
$1,400 for solar water heating
$1,400 for solar swimming pool heating
The North Carolina residential solar tax credit expires December 31, 2010.

Tax credit amount: 30% of the expenditures for purchase
and installation.
Maximum credit:
No limit for solar electric (photovoltaic) system
$2,000 for solar water heating
You can claim a credit for each system; that is, 30% of the eligible expenditures for the solar water heating equipment up to $2,000 and 30% of the eligible expenditures for photovoltaic equipment with no limit.
The Federal residential solar tax credit is effective January 1, 2009.
